Two Wicked Desserts

The Blurb

magicMagic Springs, Idaho, may be a small town, but witch Mia Malone is living an enchanted life running her own catering business and cooking school. And while she’s teaching the locals culinary craft, her grandmother is teaching her witchcraft for the day she inherits the family magical spells that have been passed down for generations. Unfortunately, all that knowledge is not helping Mia or her grandmother in removing the spirit of warlock Dorian Alexander from Mia’s cat Mr. Darcy.

But even though Dorian hasn’t yet left this earthly plane, his spells have already been transferred to his daughter Cindy’s grimoire. An actress looking for her big Hollywood break, Cindy is hoping there’s something in her father’s bag of tricks to make her a star. But playing with magic has only resulted in a trip to Idaho where Cindy finds herself the number one suspect in the murder of a hitman whose body was found in the garden of Mia’s Morsels. Now it’s up to Mia to conjure up a killer before everything she’s worked so hard for vanishes with a poof!

The Review
I am a big fan of witch based cozy series (some even accuse me of being a witch cozy connoisseur). Lynn Cahoon’s newest addition to the “A Kitchen Witch Mystery” series, Two Wicked Desserts is an enjoyable read, but… it needs a lot more magic. Honestly, I would love to see more magic being performed in this series, especially in the kitchen, where Mia’s talent is supposed to shine, and this book could have done with a great deal more of Gran and her abilities.

Mia is cooking up a storm, but when a body is found in her backyard, the cooking almost comes to a stop as she investigates the identity of the victim and tracks down a killer. As a witch who creates magic in the kitchen, Mia’s business is booming, but it wouldn’t take much to derail all of her progress, and having another body show up could tip the scales. Finding out that the victim may have been killed by Dorian’s (aka Mr. Darcy) daughter, Cindy, with a spell gone wrong, puts them all in jeopardy. It’s hard to find suspects other than Cindy when the victim is unknown. Slowly Mia begins to find suspects and clues to the victim’s identity and the murder, but in doing so, she places herself and Gran in danger.

The victim in this story plays no part in the overall scheme, he is an unknown person, and even when he is identified as a hitman, he doesn’t play a role. No one knows who the hitman was after, or at least no one is claiming to know. The relationships that are developing are exciting and make the characters come to life. The setting is fun; having lived in Idaho for many years and knowing how beautiful it is, I would like to see more descriptions of the town. The murderer is uncovered, but it is difficult to get a real sense of finality in this case as the evidence is sketchy at best. I’d like to see more magic in the next book and the witch aspect explored more in-depth. Gran’s story, I think, would be fascinating to learn. A few questions are not resolved in Two Wicked Desserts, but hopefully, the next book will present some solid resolutions to the ongoing issues. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one in the series.
