Murder At The Lobstah Shack

lobstahFrom clam chowdahs to oysters on the half-shell, Tulia Peters’ Lobstah Shack offers locals and tourists in Westham, Massachusetts, some of Cape Cod’s most amazing cuisine. But when the body of Annette DiCicero is discovered in the kitchen’s walk-in freezer, with a custom-made claw-handled lobster pick lodged in her neck, spoiled appetites are the least of Tulia’s worries.

After a heated public argument with Annette, Tulia is a person of interest in the police’s homicide investigation. To clear Tulia’s name, Mac and the Cozy Capers Book Group snoop into Annette’s personal life. Between her temperamental husband, his shady business partner, and two women tied to Annette’s past life as “Miss New Bedford,” there are now several suspects and multiple motives. And they’re getting crabby about Mac intruding on their affairs.

The Review
I like Mac, but even in the third book of the “A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery” series, Murder At The Lobstah Shack she takes some getting used to in order to really like. I enjoy that Mac runs her bicycle sales and repair shop and works hand-in-hand with her brother. She is also very involved with the rest of her family and makes them a part of her day-to-day life. The real problem with Mac is that she can’t keep her nose out of murder investigations.

When her business neighbor, friend, and owner of The Lobstah Shack, Tulia, calls on her to help when she finds a body in her walk-in freezer, no one can blame Mac for running straight into the middle of another mystery. It doesn’t take long for her to find suspects or motives, but finding the evidence and the truth seem to evade her until the very end. She spends more time running around than running her bicycle shop, and even when her grandmother lands in the hospital, Mac spends too much time following the trail of crumbs that lead her straight into the sights of a killer.

The twists and turns run throughout the story, and Mac has to follow every one of them to their conclusion. Eventually, the killer is unveiled, but not without a few heart-stopping moments that will leave readers wondering if Mac might not be better off going back to her bicycle shop and letting the police do their job. Characters in this series are fun and enjoyable to spend time with, especially Mac’s parrot, Bella. Even when they aren’t as robust as they have been in previous installments. The location couldn’t be better, and the food and recipes will have your mouth watering. Overall Murder At The Lobstah Shack is an enjoyable read but might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

The Author
bicycleEdith Maxwell (aka Maddie Day) has always been a writer. She made her living writing technical documentation in the software industry, wrote features and essays as a free-lance journalist, edited medical texts, and produced several published articles and a doctoral dissertation in the field of linguistics. And before that, she wrote fiction and news articles, with her first paid published story appearing at age 9. Creating fiction, long and short, is what makes her happiest (although she wrote a prose poem about her late father that she’s rather proud of).

As a former organic farmer, Edith knows the language and tensions of someone like Cam Flaherty, the farmer in the Local Foods mysteries. Edith lived in southern Indiana for five years and loved the slow pace and language of its natives, so it made sense to set the Country Store Mysteries there. She taught independent childbirth classes and worked as a doula for some years, giving her insight into the life of a historical midwife as portrayed in the Quaker Midwife Mysteries. And her new Cozy Capers Book Group series comes straight out of both her imagination and several solo writing retreats on Cape Cod.

Edith lives in Amesbury, Massachusetts, but is originally a fourth-generation Californian. She has two grown sons and lives in an antique house with her beau and their two cats.

Other books in this series readers will enjoy are Murder At The Taffy Shop or another series from this author, such as “A Country Store Mystery” and the book, Candy Slain Murder.
