The Cozy Review

Mystical Murder

Tess Quinn’s life is drastically changed on her thirtieth birthday with the unexpected visit of her estranged aunt, Loretta. When unusual occurrences begin happening it doesn’t take Tess long to realize that she is the cause. Tess is a regular everyday working woman living in Elk Hill, Wisconsin. When her long lost aunt shows up at her door for a visit, Tess soon discovers that she is part of a long line of witches. Although she doesn’t understand it, she doesn’t fear her newfound magical abilities and wants to use them for good. Unfortunately, when a man is found murdered Tess feels it is up to her to solve the crime, and using her powers seems the best way to go about it, even after her aunt warns her it could be dangerous. She steps into the middle of a police investigation, and may not live to tell about it.

Author: Patti Benning
Genre: Paranormal Mystery

Rating:

Tess’s Aunt Loretta is a compelling character and the aunt we would love to have in our family. She makes everything seem easy and has the patience to teach her niece the lessons she will need to learn the most. Her love for Tess is evident, even though they have not seen each other in 15 years. The day after Loretta shows up on Tess’ doorstep is the highlight of the story. When she has given up hope and decides to leave, is the most memorable scene in the book.

The story is an easy read at a short 138 pages, and that may be its downfall as well. Although fast-paced, and fairly well written, the author doesn’t give us enough information about the characters. Tess, as well as Loretta’s background, are not well-rounded, and although the reader will like the characters, they will feel cheated to an extent due to the lack of details and explanations. The resolution to the mystery will disappoint most readers.

Patti Benning has talent and imagination but has tried to sum up, a mystery in as few words as possible. This results in the reader not caring about the characters or the outcome. This book could be excellent if the author took the time to write at more length and truly invest the reader in the location, the characters, and the plot. Perhaps the second installment will fair better. Unfortunately, this book cannot be recommended.
