Resting Witch Face

Resting Witch Face

Dewdrop has a plethora of witches as residents. In fact, almost everyone who lives in Dewdrop is a witch of one sort or another. Seeing ghosts and strange things isn’t anything to worry about, but when one ghost turns into a real body, it’s a different story.

Gemma Iren is a flower farmer. She knows nothing about murder or murder investigations, and she doesn’t want to know either. However, she feels she is the main suspect in the killing of a visitor during the Hettymoot celebration. A time when the matriarch of the witches rises from her grave to bestow a blessing on all those gathered around her grave. That and she found the body. Gemma has little choice but to get involved.

The witches of Dewdrop, who are all related to one another in some fashion or another are not phased when a dead boy turns up at the gallows in the town square. Men in Dewdrop do not live long. Long ago something happened, and the men of the family ended up paying the price. Few ever live past 25. Everyone just assumes that the dead boy is a cousin to someone here in town and it is fate doing what it has always done. It’s up to Gemma, with the help of her cousin Dot and her crazy aunts to solve the murder. They will need to appease their ancestor and try to save her brother from being the next male family member to die.

Series: The Witches of Madison County – Book #1
Author: Hazel Hendrix
Genre: Witch/Paranormal Mystery
Publisher: Independent

Rating:two

Gemma is a wonderful main character with lots of energy and loyalty but who also wants a life outside of Dewdrop and her boring routine life. In truth, she loves her life, but sometimes she wants to get away just like everyone does. She is a funny, intelligent character that readers will fall in love with. However, her brother is equally lovable and hopefully will play a bigger part in book two.

Dot is fantastic; she’s filled with the need to have children and to find a man despite her massive shyness getting the better of her at times. Her need to use potions to bolster her ego enough not to go running into the woods when a boy talks to her is delightful. She is going to be readers favorite and will continue to grow as a character.

If there is a fault with Ms. Hendrix’s first book, it is the fact that too many questions were left unanswered. I am sure the reader will get the answers in book two, but they should not have to wait for the next book to get closure for the first one. There are specific issues, such as how her brother and the police captain know each other that should have been wrapped up at the end of this book to make the reader happy. All books, even those in a series need to stand on their own, and it is unfortunate that this one does not. However, with that said this is still a good read. It is fast-paced with an easy to follow plot, characters that are memorable and worth learning about.

Resting Witch Face is highly recommended. Readers who enjoy “Witch” based books or Paranormal books will enjoy this book and the future additions to the series. If readers are looking for a new writer to follow this author should be on their list.
